Maryland Lottery: Retired Veteran Doubles His Halloween Week Prize

Maryland (STL.News) A retired military veteran experienced the shock and awe of a six-figure Maryland Lottery Powerball win in the Oct. 28 drawing.  His decision to add the Power Play multiplier to his ticket doubled his prize to $100,032, giving the happy winner his biggest Lottery score yet.

The 57-year-old initially visited a Royal Farms store to buy Lottery tickets.  However, a Lottery equipment malfunction ended his hopes to make a purchase at that site.  The Fort Meade resident then visited High’s #048 located at 1624 Annapolis Road in Odenton.  Following his Lottery routine, the player used combinations of his mother’s date of birth for the $15 ticket.

He didn’t realize his luck until the next day.  The loyal Powerball player returned to the store the next morning and scanned his ticket using Lottery equipment.  He suspected something was up when the ticket checker indicated he should visit Lottery headquarters.

He next visited the Lottery website to check his ticket against the drawing’s winning Powerball numbers.  The retiree’s shocked conclusion: “I’ve hit it big!” His family was also in shock when they heard the news.  One person replied, “Stop playing” because they thought he was joking.

When asked of his plans for spending the windfall, the happy winner said he plans to pay off bills and give to charities.

No one has hit the Powerball jackpot for weeks and the prize keeps on climbing.  Players can try to win $149 million in the Saturday, Nov. 7 drawing.  The cash option is $116 million.
