Delaware Department of Corrections, Division of Forensic Science Investing Death of Inmate Norris E. Durham

Smyrna, DE (STL.News) The Delaware Department of Correction (DOC) and Delaware Division of Forensic Science are investigating the death of an inmate at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center (JTVCC), which occurred yesterday afternoon.

Preliminary investigation has determined that at approximately 2:05 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2019 Norris E. Durham, 67 years old from Dover, Delaware, who was housed in the prison infirmary for an unrelated medical condition, complained of having chest pains.  As medical staff obtained his vital signs Durham lost consciousness. 911 was called and chest compressions were
immediately initiated.  Additional life-saving measures were continued by emergency medical personnel upon arrival but were unsuccessful in reviving the inmate.  Durham was pronounced deceased at JTVCC by Kent County EMS Paramedics at 2:50 p.m.

Norris E. Durham was serving a Life Sentence plus 30 years at JTVCC, effective October 24, 1981, for one count of Rape 1st Degree and one count of Kidnapping 2nd Degree.

Durham’s body was turned over to the Division of Forensic Science to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.  Preliminary investigation by the Delaware Department of Correction has indicated that there were no suspicious circumstances and no foul play suspected at this time.
