Cortez proceeds Joe Crowley assuming the office on January 3, 2019. Cortez was born in New York City on October 13, 1989.
Before Cortez’s political career, she worked as an educational director for the 2017 Northeast Collegiate World Series for the National Hispanic Institute and worked as a bartender. Cortez was elected to serve in Congress, making her the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress in history.
The parents are Blanca Ocasio-Cortez and Sergio Ocasio. Her family’s religious background is Catholic. Her father was born to a Puerto Rican family, while her mother is a native Puerto Rican. Her father was an architect born in the Bronx raising Cortez in the Parkchester neighborhood in an apartment, later moving to a Yorktown Heights house.
Her father passed away in 2008 from lung cancer while she was a sophomore at Boston University.
Cortez graduated cum laude from Boston University’s College of Arts and Science in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations.
